The Historical and Religious Significance of Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. According to Islamic tradition, just as Ibrahim was about to carry out the sacrifice, God intervened and provided a ram to take his son’s place. This act of devotion and faith is celebrated by Muslims worldwide, and the holiday is marked by special prayers, feasts, and acts of charity.
The Official Holidays of Eid al-Adha
As with all Islamic holidays, the exact dates of Eid al-Adha are determined by the lunar calendar and the sighting of the moon. Eid-al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah with the Day of Arafat a day before on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah which is also considered a holiday.
