Introducing New AI Mode Search

On March 5, 2025, Google introduced its new “AI Mode” in Google Search to compete as the best AI search, among others, Search AI options such as Perplexity AI or ChatGPT Search by OpenAI.

Google One AI Premium subscribers will gain access to this artificial intelligence AI search service in the upcoming week and can test it through Search Labs. This Google’s AI Mode will be useful exactly for detailed multi-part questions and will answer with follow-up questions in Google Search.

The new feature is powered by a modified version of Gemini 2.0, a system that has proven to help users’ reason and process a variety of information seamlessly for more complex and comparative questions.

For example, if you were to ask, “What are the differences in sleep tracking features between a smart ring, a smartwatch, and a tracking mat?” Google AI Mode would list the differences each product offers and provide links to articles that explore the topic further.

You could ask follow-up questions such as, “What happens to your heart rate during deep sleep?” Google says that before this feature, you would need to pose multiple questions just to compare options or try to understand a topic with traditional searches.

Under AI Mode, users can search the web and get information relevant to the real world, including live shopping information on millions of items.

Robby Stein, who is responsible for product development at Google AI Search, said in a conversation that people who utilize this feature appear to search with longer than normal queries. This also means that they like to ask more follow-up questions than previously. This implies they are attempting to solve more sophisticated queries requiring elaborate responses. Google is very happy about this because it offers different ways to use their search engine optimization SEO techniques, and also pings up attention towards – generative engine optimization GEO. ‘Really excited because it opens up so many new ways of using the search engine,’ he said.

Stein also discussed Google’s upcoming launch of a feature called AI Overviews, which adds a short response to the queries at the top of the AI search results. Users have asked for AI answers to even more types of searches, so Google is excited to introduce Artificial intelligence AI Mode.

Concept-wise, Google AI Mode deploys a technique referred to as query fan-out where several related tasks that need different resources are sourced simultaneously. The derived outcomes are then unified to answer in a meaningful way.

With Google AI Mode, or any new and advanced technology systems for that matter, there will inevitably be mistakes. Mistakes that stem from the system attempting to accomplish something it knows too little about. It is, in essence, a novice attempting to do something not geared or programmed into its base knowledge. For accuracy-oriented systems, there are reasons behind optimistic hoping for their accuracy, such as, for instance, the system’s capacity to fact check its answers. This can prove to be essential when taking sensitive matters such as health into account.

Based on AI’s development from the beta version, Google claims that they will capture the user’s experience more vividly and enrich it with more visually pleasing graphics and user-made content. Additional upgrade will allow the system to figure out when to use hyperlinks or direct responses for topics like video how-to guides or booking ticket questions.
