Apple’s App Store to Feature AI-Generated App Review Summaries for Easier Browsing
Apple is about to introduce new AI-generated summaries of user reviews to the Apple App Store in the upcoming iOS 18.4 update, currently in public beta. According to Macworld, the latest beta version for iOS and iPadOS shows a short AI summary of user reviews for some app listings in the iOS App Store.
According to Apple’s developer site, the summaries are created by Large Language Models (LLMs) to organize important points from users’ reviews into short paragraphs.
Apple says that artificial intelligence (AI) generative models provide summaries in everyday language to share what users think about the app. They start with good feedback and end with any negative comments. Apple added that they will also update the summary AI at least once weekly when new reviews come in. Users can also tap and hold on a review if they want to report any issues with the feature.
Who Can Use It?
These summaries will now be available in the US Apple App Store for apps and games in English. They will only appear for apps with enough reviews to create a summary. Later this year, they will also be available in other countries and languages.
This Apple’s AI for apps update makes finding good apps easier. Instead of reading dozens of reviews, you’ll get a quick idea of what people like (or don’t like) about an app. It also helps developers because their app’s best features and feedback will stand out.
Who is the Pioneer?
Apple is making this update after Amazon added AI-generated highlights of reviews to its shopping site in 2023. These short paragraphs show the main features of a product and what customers often say about it. They will be shown at the top of the full reviews.
In theory, review summaries are meant to be helpful. They save you time by giving you the main points so you don’t have to read all the reviews. However, they might also be easy to manipulate, which could lead some dishonest companies to fill the review sections with fake ones.
In the experience with AI-Generated review summaries, we’ve noticed they emphasize the good things first, which can feel a bit misleading. For instance, if someone is writing product reviews, and if something is not good, I will definitely say that first.
How to Use Apple AI?
Well, if you are looking to use Apple AI in your iPhone, this could be possible if an IOS 18.1 or later version.
- Firstly, open your settings and tap on “Apple Intelligence & Siri”.
- Here you might ask to “Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist” (for a day or a few hours)
- Once activated, your device will start downloading on-device AI models automatically.
What to Expect with Next?
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the majority of mobile app development companies are busy developing and adding helpful AI features to their apps. Apple’s AI-generated review summaries are the result of one of those. But we already see hundreds of fake reviews on apps and websites, where customers share their opinions about products. Adding AI summary or Summary AI could make this issue worse. If consumers start depending too much on these summaries, they might not take the time to read all the reviews, both the good ones and the bad ones.
